Eskimo Prints - James A. Houston




I was browsing in the library the other day and came across this book - Eskimo Prints by James A Houston.
In the late 1950's he was in Cape Dorset and one of the locals was sat next to him studying his tow packets of identical cigarettes and he said that he thought it must be hard work to sit and paint the same design on endless packets of cigarettes!
So then the explanation of printing began and many people wanted to try out prinitng for themselves.
I find it really interesting how some of these images remind me of other movements that were going on at the same time in the southern world.....
